Seal first, then glaze

A window with a 1 mm gap around the sash leaks more noise than any glass upgrade can recover. Multi-point locking that pulls the sash evenly onto its gaskets is the cheapest acoustic improvement available.

Asymmetric double glazing

Two panes of the same thickness resonate together. Pairing, say, 6 mm with 4 mm across the cavity breaks that shared resonance and measurably lowers what reaches the pillow.

Laminated glass earns its price

The PVB interlayer in laminated glass damps vibration in exactly the frequency band that road and rail noise occupies. In a bedroom facing a main road, it outperforms simply going thicker.

Mind the rest of the wall

Once the window is sealed, the weak point moves — usually to the door undercut or an unsealed AC sleeve. Acoustics is always a whole-room problem.
